An area of low pressure off to the north and west, which brought light to moderate snow Sunday, will be moving out of the state by the evening.

All this snow, freezing rain and ice leave some doubting the accuracy of Punxsutawney Phil’s supposed prediction of springlike weather starting early. So, timing the snow out to predict accumulations is challenging.

As the storm departs, temperatures will return to around average with highs in the early 30s and lows in the mid-teens, according to Tyburski, who noted a warm-up next weekend with highs in the 40s. The National Weather Service said the precipitation was light Monday morning, but with temperatures in the 20s, it was freezing immediately on bridges, roads and other surfaces. Tuesday the temperatures will warm up and the rain is expected to move out.

The rain, however, will fall heavy at times before wrapping up mid-afternoon Tuesday.

The forecast for ice accumulation is well below the amount the Triangle saw last month, which resulted in widespread power outages.

In all, more than 75 million people from the Midwest to the Eastern Seaboard are expected to get walloped by snow and freezing rain into Tuesday. In fact, we could see between 1 to 2 inches of rain during Tuesday morning.

Saturday afternoon: A slight chance of snow after 4 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 13. After that the weather system coming from the southwest is expected to bring freezing rain, sleet and snow Monday evening into Tuesday.

Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 14.

The weather service that snow accumulation will be around 2 to 4 inches, and ice accumulation will be around a tenth of an inch.

After all that, we’ll have cloudy skies and some flurries or snow showers on Wednesday. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. High near 49. Sunday: Partly sunny.
