Events planned to honor Martin Luther King’s legacy

The celebration begins Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m. with readings and displays of art by finalists and winners of the annual Martin Luther King (MLK) Community Coalition Art and Essay Contest. The event takes place this year at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Dakota High School, 21051 21 Mile Road in Macomb Township.

A memorial rally is planned for 11 a.m. the same day at the Dayton Convention Center, located at 22 E. Fifth St. Dr. Albert Brinson, a contemporary and friend of Dr. King, will be on campus for a discussion forum about his time working with the Civil Rights Movement.

Admission to all National Parks is free on Monday. Day coming up next week, local students at Washington Elementary School in Fayetteville are participating in a series of service projects Friday (Jan. 15) to benefit their community.

Since 1999, the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center and Student Life’s Pay It Forward cohort have joined together to put on the Martin Luther King Jr.

Helping the homeless: The Memphis Urban League of Young Professionals will be packaging toiletry bags for the homeless at 413 N. Cleveland from 9 a.m.to noon Monday. After, an opening ceremony will feature musical performances as well as a talk about King’s life, Cohen said.

This was the 37th birthday salute, and city leaders say they hope it will be a growing celebration for many years to come. He said they have since found that allowing volunteers to choose their own events has increased participation.
