Everton 0 Arsenal 2: Gunners still in the hunt

But goals from Danny Welbeck and youngster Alex Iwobi, on his first league start, sealed a first league victory in four to leave the Gunners 11 points behind leaders Leicester City with a game in hand.

“We have never performed in this manner”, said Everton manager Roberto Martinez, who referenced the suspended Gareth Barry as a hole in the lineup.

“We have to be humble and fight in every game like today (Saturday)”.

“If you lose it is disastrous but we were not as bad as that”, said Wenger.

Arsenal fans have a new hero after Alex Iwobi starred on his full Premier League debut.

That was the Gunners’ first defeat in six matches against the Hornets, and punters may choose to use their free bet to back Arsene Wenger’s side to gain revenge when the two sides clash in the league next month.

A long ball from Hector Bellerin caught out the Toffees backline, giving Iwobi the opportunity to surge clear of Ramiro Funes Mori and slide the ball through the legs of Robles and into the net.

“[Alex Iwobi] is an intelligent boy who is passionate about the game and wants to learn”. We are not the flavour of the week at the moment but if we don’t believe no one will do it for us.

“I haven’t seen us play as badly this season”. After that he improved very quickly.

“We were too pedestrian and we allowed Arsenal to have too much movement”.

“I think the team has had more objective with the ball lately and we are playing better football”.

“It’s been a hard couple of weeks, so it was a good thing today to get back to our winning ways, and it’s something we can build on from here”, Welbeck told BT Sport.

“We know the quality we have, we showed it seven days ago”, he said when asked to explain the performance. Arsenal looked the fresh team.

The game was calmer in the second half as the Gunners looked to defend their lead by dominating possession and putting a high defensive performance.
