The Magpies are hoping that a late-bid could bring the versatile player to St James’ Park as they look to improve on their ageing defence.

“The club has also negotiated to retain a significant on-going financial interest in Mason’s career moving forward”.

With defender John Stones continuing to be linked with a move to reigning Premier League champions Chelsea, Roberto Martinez has issued a “hands off” warning to Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United are looking to hijack Chelsea’s swoop for Everton defender John Stones, according to reports.

That made sense, whereas Stones has some way to go before he surpasses 100 games, and last season with Everton was not exactly an impressive one for any of their squad.

“He’s 18, already played 20 games league one which shows the potential and we will be delighted to conclude it”. For us it’s clear – we will embrace our youngsters, we will be fearless and we’re not a selling club.

Defender Holgate trained with Manchester United during pre-season and has also attracted interest from Everton, Aston Villa and Swansea.

He hinted yesterday new faces could arrive before the transfer window closes.

“I expect him to train today”, Martinez said at a press conference, adding that fellow injury doubts Muhamed Besic, Gerard Deulofeu and Aiden McGeady had all returned to training.

“Naturally you do set wheels in motion for different scenarios or even two or three to happen”. Those are compliments; it means the players are performing well – but nothing else. “It’s such a young group, I think they grew up a lot”. While losing Stones would deplete their options further, the money they would receive in return would allow them to strengthen in terms of depth.
