Everton pays tribute to former manager Howard Kendall

As an Everton player, Kendall won the title in 1969-70 and in his first spell as manager at Goodison Park – between 1981 and 1987 – he won two championships, an FA Cup and a Cup Winners’ Cup.

In the first of three spells as Everton manager, the Toffees won the league title twice and lifted the FA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup.

Lineker always said the Everton team of 1985-86 was the best he ever played in, and few Evertonians doubt that it was the most impressive and stylish since the ones Kendall used to feature in as a player.

Everton and Manchester United players join in a minutes applause at Goodison Park for former Everton manager Howard Kendall.

He passed away in hospital in Southport this morning at the age of 69, surrounded by his loved ones.

Neville Southall, goalkeeper of Kendall’s great Everton team, tweeted: “A great manager, an even greater man. Whatever I did was exclusively down to him”.

Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher, who also played for Everton at one point in his career, described Kendall as the one who gave him his best football memories.

“Howard Kendall is going to be missed and will be a big miss for football”.

And his passing is a death the Everton family will find hard to come to terms with.

He went on to manage Everton on three separate occasions, winning the First Division title in 1984/85 and 1986/87. If you did the business for him he loved you to bits.

“If Howard had stayed at Everton then I think the club would have dominated in the 1980 and 90s”.

Former Everton striker Graeme Sharp said: “It is really sad news. Thanks for the memories, Howard”.

“I had nothing but admiration for him as a player, a manager and a friend”.

During his time on the pitch, Kendall helped Prston reach the FA Cup in 1964, before he repeated the feat with the Toffees in 1968. Fantastic character. Be sadly missed.

Frustrated at not being able to offer European football and therefore attract the best players, Kendall himself quit in 1987 to spend a couple of seasons at Athletic Bilbao.
