Everton left-back Leighton Baines will be out for at least three months after having ankle surgery.

The England and Toffees full-back went under the knife on Thursday to correct the problem he sustained in training on the eve of the Barclays Premier League campaign.

The 30-year-old picked up the injury in training on Friday and missed Everton’s home draw with newly-promoted Watford on the opening day of the Premier League season.

The defender suffered the injury just prior to the start of the season.

“He looked refreshed, he looked strong and he looked at a really, really good level”.

‘We were preparing for the Watford game and in one incident in training, he blocks the ball and it hits him in exactly the same place where he had surgery a few months back.

The England worldwide missed the final two games of last season.

Brendan Galloway is again expected to fill in at left-back for Everton against Southampton on Saturday with Leighton Baines absent. Luke Garbutt, who is on loan at Fulham, is out for six weeks with ankle ligament damage also. “But he is not a player who I would expect to perform straightaway in the Premier League, that would be very unfair”.

Everton are considering a loan move for former Manchester United full back Alexander Buttner
