Everybody Loves Raymond star Doris Roberts dies aged 90

Everybody Loves Raymond star Doris Roberts passed away on Sunday at the age of 90, her son confirmed in a statement.

Roberts died overnight in her sleep, spokeswoman Janet Daily said Monday.

But she was best known for her role as Marie, the interfering, manipulative mother of Long Island-based Italian American sportswriter Raymond Barone, played by Romano, in Everybody Loves Raymond.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri and raised in The Bronx, New York, Roberts made her professional acting debut in 1952 on the TV show Studio One.

Roberts landed the part of meddling mother Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond in 1996, going on to star in nine seasons of the show, covering 210 episodes.

“She never stopped”, Romano said in a statement to E!

She told Variety: ‘They are different rhythms, different personas.

Hollywood will surely miss Doris Roberts, and will continue to mourn her death.

She continued, “She was amusing and tough and loved life, living it to the fullest”.

“We were so privileged to have her call CBS home for so many years. It was truly a privilege”.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” creator Phil Rosenthal tweeted: “We loved our mom, the great #DorisRoberts”.

Ray Romano has paid tribute to his “Everybody Loves Raymond” co-star Doris Roberts.

In addition to son Michael, Roberts is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jane, and three grandchildren: Kelsey, Andrew and Devon Cannata. “I love you and I miss you”.

During her lengthly career Roberts was nominated for 11 Emmys, beginning in 1983 when she won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series award for her role in “St. Elsewhere”. Peter Boyle, who played husband to Roberts’ character, died in 2006.

She is also remembered for playing Grandma Frances in festive film “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”, and starring in comedy classic “The Heartbreak Kid”.
