However, rather than opting for Huawei’s approach to the problem, Apple has taken a different route.

The endless rumor mill had set me up for what the iPhone 7 was going to be: a refinement of the iPhone 6s series with component upgrades. The 7 Plus is slightly slimmer than the 6s Plus, though. I’m not sure I’d recommend that, as the glossy body was attracting fingerprints pretty quickly at the demo. John Lewis said sales of wireless headphone were already 60% higher than last week after Apple’s announcement, while Currys PC World said its sales of wireless headphones were up 163% compared with past year. Instead it does a little vibrate when you apply pressure to it because the taptic engine creates the sensation of a button click.
A quick search on Expedia.ca found a trip for a seven-day stay at a five-star resort in Punta Cana for ,050 – one dollar more than the 32 GB iPhone 7 Plus (without tax factored in). Moto wanted to make the thinnest phone possible so that combined with a Moto Mod, such as the Moto Insta-Share Projector, or the Off-Grid Powerpack, it would feel as thin and natural as possible. It isn’t waterproof-you aren’t supposed to swim with it, for instance-but it should be more accident-proof. Take the dual speakers. Rather than thinking about your phone, think for a moment about your other devices such as your refrigerator, microwave oven, bicycle or even your auto. I hope that AirPods don’t scare everyone else off from trying to make Bluetooth headphones.
But the earphone jack, which dates back almost 150 years and took its 3.5 mm form in the 1980s with the boom in Walkman cassette players, may not be obsolete just yet. That phone will run you $1,029 for a 128 GB model and $1,159 for a 256 GB model. They aren’t the first to release truly-wireless buds, but you look at the press shots, the impracticalities wash away, and you think “damn this is futuristic”.
Other physical changes are invisible.
Apple determinedly stuck with the 8MP camera all the way up to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus after we first saw it in the iPhone 4, but Samsung fought back with the likes of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Edge S7 Edge, jumping ahead of the mighty iPhone (when it comes to image quality at least). There are few apps not now released in duplicate – for Apple’s iOS and the much more open and increasingly dominant Android.
Under the hood, Apple has a new quad-core A10 Fusion processor. The best performance and battery life ever in an iPhone.
They still come in the 38mm and 42mm case sizes, and the only real difference is that Series 2 models are around one millimetre thicker, which is probably to accommodate a larger battery and other internal components.
Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at price comparison service uSwitch, said: “The loss of the headphone jack is likely to divide opinion”. This means the phone will help correct any slight shake of hand or even make moving shots easier. None of those features seem to win sales, though. It introduces advanced new camera systems. However, they might still be available via some third-party websites.
If the iPhone really does receive a RAM upgrade then the device should perform consistently in tests. We look forward to spending more time with the phones at launch and figuring that out.
