The 23-year-old scored 11 goals and 26 assists in 80 regular season games last season.

He came into his own during the playoffs, recording seven points during 14 postseason contests, including the game-winning goal in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Islanders. His offensive talent is undeniable, and he should see his numbers increase in 2015-16. It looks like a deal will be hammered out fairly soon.

Kuznetsov said he and the Capitals talked about a longer contract, but they settled on a deal that will keep Kuznetsov a restricted free agent for another two years at the conclusion of this contract.

“I played good hockey but I have to play better”, Kuznetsov said. These moves make the Capitals one of the most skilled clubs next year all throughout the league and an early favorite to win the Stanley Cup. “I have to be better too”. Keep an eye on the situation as it unfolds, but all signs point to Kuznetsov staying in DC for now.

Kuznetsov is working with Washington strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish, mostly off-ice exercises that build strength.

“I feel like, that’s it. These guys don’t have to practice again, they’re on vacation”, Kuznetsov said with a laugh.

As for his summer plans, Kuznetsov seems to be focusing on making himself comfortable in Washington.

“We’ll find a couple good area where we have a chance to walk with daughter”, he said.
