Ex-adviser charged in $2.1 billion arms scandal

This is even as Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High Court, Abuja granted Chief Raymond Dokpesi, ex-Chairman, DAAR Communications Plc a N400 million bail.

The former spy master is already facing illegal possession of weapons charges, as well as being under investigation for awarding some $2 billion in bogus deals for fighter jets, helicopters, weapons and ammunition to fight the deadly Boko Haram Islamist group.

The EFCC, according to Vangurad Newspaper among other things, alleged that the sum of N13.570 billion, being money for an “agreement”, between Dasuki and the ex-Director of Finance in the office of the NSA, Salisu, was looted from the national treasury.

‎Specifically, EFCC, alleged that it was the accused persons that supervised the unlawful disbursement of billions of Naira from different bank accounts belonging to the office of the NSA. He held that in case the sureties are serving Directors, each must produce a letter from their permanent secretary confirming their status and appointment while for the retired Director, he ordered that the sureties must produce government gazette in which he or she was listed to show that he or she retired as a director.

He would, however, be remanded in Kuje Prison pending the perfection of the bail conditions.

The trio are expected to be arraigned on various charges bordering on fraud and money laundering.

However as expected, the accused persons pleaded not guilty to all the 19 counts involving the misappropriation of about N32bn when the charges were read to them on Monday.

Speaking to journalists, Raji said the charges against his clients is a billable offence.

Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) who led the prosecution team in separate counter-affidavits to the bail applications, said the accused persons could abscond if granted bail by the court.

“The accused initially denied having any transaction with the office of the National Security Adviser until he was confronted with the evidence”, he said.
