Three young people, all current or former student athletes at the State University of NY in Geneseo, were found stabbed to death in an apparent murder-suicide, police said Monday.

The paper also reported that Kingston, who had been a SUNY Geneseo student, but was not enrolled for the spring semester, was from a prominent family in the town with a presence dating back to the 1840s.

They were found in a home close to the SUNY Geneseo campus, around 35 miles south of Rochester, at 6am yesterday. Kingston was believed to have stabbed Annese and Hutchinson to death with a large knife before killing himself with the same weapon. It’s possible that Annese, 21, and Hutchinson, 24, were sleeping when Kingston entered, but police were not sure.

After the attack, Kingston apparently called his father, who relayed the information to Geneseo police.

The anxious father told the dispatcher that Kingston said he had killed his girlfriend and was going to kill himself, according to USA media outlets.

Szczesniak said Kingston and Annese were together for around three years, and that Kingston had taken the breakup hard.

At the time of the double murders, cops told of two other people being in the home. Like Annese, Kingston had played on his high school’s basketball team.

Hutchinson had played hockey since he was a child and wanted to be a firefighter after graduating. Hutchinson was originally from North Vancouver, British Columbia, majored in geography, minored in business studies and was a member of the hockey team.

Police say whatever happened in the minutes that followed likely was over shortly after it began. He didn’t know the nature of the relationship between Hutchinson and Annese. He had recently indicated that he was upset about his breakup with Annese and had made suicidal comments, Szczesniak said, though he hadn’t threatened to hurt anyone besides himself.

A memorial for the two slain students has been scheduled for Wednesday night, beginning at 7 p.m., in the SUNY Geneseo gym.

“He was an incredible kid”, Smyl said of the young defenceman.

One of the deceased is Colin Kingston, 24, a member of a Geneseo farm family.

“Nestled next to the Village of Geneseo – one of 24 communities nationwide to be recognized as a National Historic Landmark – the campus’ ivy-covered brick buildings evince a traditional college ambiance”, the college website says. She said the school has offered its condolences to the victims’ families.

The victims have been identified as SUNY Geneseo students Kelsey Annese and Matthew Hutchinson, and former student Colin Kingston.
