The Martens’ attorney confirmed to local reporters in Davidson County last night that they had each been granted bail of $200,000 after appearing before the court in connection with Mr Corbett’s death.

A North Carolina woman and her former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent father have been charged in the August murder of the woman’s husband. Corbett was found around 3 a.m. August 2 with head wounds that were sustained in a domestic disturbance, deputies said.

According to police reports obtained by The-Dispatch, the caller, believed to be 65-year-old Martens, told a Davidson County 911 operater he had been in an argument with his son-in-law and struck him with a baseball bat.

Outside the courtroom, Ms Martens Corbett’s uncle, Mike Earnest issued a statement on behalf of the family.

Responding to the news of the Martens’ indictment Lynch said “We want all of the facts to go in front of a jury so that we can all know the truth”.

“They will both enter pleas of not guilty and once the events of August 2nd are presented they will be exonerated”.

Martens argued to a court that as the children’s stepmother, she had more right to bring them up than Corbett’s family in his home country of Ireland. Judge Royster agreed to the bail conditions and commented that it worked well when lawyers reach such an agreement. But the clerk of Davidson County Superior Court said it was not in the best interests of the children and they were transferred to the care of their aunt, Tracey Lynch.
