Ex-Kings forward Mike Richards charged with possession of a controlled substance
An National Hockey League player who was stopped at the Canada-U.S. border in June and allegedly found with controlled substances was officially charged Tuesday, Emerson RCMP said Thursday. He is due to appear in Emerson provincial courto n September 10.

TSN’s Rick Westhead provided more details, including what type of punishment Richards could receive.
It has been almost two months since the Kings terminated Richards’ contract over what the team termed a “material breach of contract”.
Further reports revealed that Richards was being investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and that Richards’ arrest may have involved the painkiller oxycodone or oxycontin.

The Kenora, Ontario, Canada, native has spent a total of nine seasons in the National Hockey League with the Philadelphia Flyers and Kings, with one All-Star appearance to his credit. The NHLPA has filed a grievance on Richards’ behalf, but a hearing date hasn’t been set yet.
