Ex-Leeds United midfielder Delph in provisional England squad for Euro 2016

Teenage striker Marcus Rashford was selected in England’s provisional 26-man squad Monday ahead of the European Championship, less than three months after making his debut for Manchester United.

The 18-year-old has been impressive in his debut season for United, netting seven goals from 16 games.

Newcastle United’s Andros Townsend is also recalled to the squad, with no place for Arsenal’s Theo Walcott.

Everton captain Phil Jagielka misses out with just three central defenders – Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling and John Stones – named in Hodgson’s initial party.

Although, I still think Rashford deserves his call up and it was the right decision from Hodgson to put him in his provisional squad.

“If it happens I will understand and I’ll work hard again next season and see where it goes”. It’s great to be able to include him.

“But I have been impressed with him”. “Obviously I’ve not been involved with England for quite a while and I’ve always thought that getting into an England squad before a tournament is based on merit”, Defoe told British media.

Walcott was not the only experienced player left out of a youthful-looking squad.

“That’s what’s kept me going, and one of the reasons I came back from the MLS”.

Hodgson still has to drop three players from the squad but Rooney believes that Rashford could very well earn his seat on the plane.

“He is in the England squad and I’m sure he will give Roy a hard decision to make in terms of trying to get into the final 23”.

“So really, to select him in a group of 26 was a very easy thing to do”.

“Michael actually played a part for us on a regular basis in the last two years but has been unfortunate with injuries”. Hodgson has some tough decisions to make.

“He had an outstanding end to the season, he is a young player who has got a future if he can continue to develop as he has done”.
