“This applies to the municipal limits of Jammu city and peripheral tehsils also”.

Police tried to disperse both the groups but the situation took an ugly turn and forced police to fire smoke shells and use bamboo sticks against the protesters accused by it of resorting to stone pelting.

Jammu observed a bandh for second consecutive day today over the demand of AIIMS in Jammu.

ACC, an amalgamation of over 70 organisations, has been leading an agitation for setting up of AIIMS in Jammu region. But various political, social and trade organizations of Jammu demanded that an AIIMS be set up also in Jammu. For defying prohibitory orders, police arrested Sharma along with some of his supporters, but released all of them after sometime. “All the trade and transport unions have extended their support to the ACC. We are hopeful that the three days of Jammu bandh would be sufficient to send a strong message to the government and especially to BJP, that the people of Jammu no longer would tolerate back-stabbing”, he said.

Supporting the AIIMS Jammu cause, he said that grant of two AIIMS to J&K is not favour but a necessity due to sensitivities involved in the matter and circumstances prevailing in the State.

“The situation is under control and bandh is going on smoothly in the rest of the district”.

Party leaders observed that this decision was historic in the sense that inhabitants of Jammu and Kashmir regions would be provided advanced health facilities at their door steps. “The lies and the false promises made by the BJP is the sole reason that the people of Jammu are on the streets today”, the former minister said.

Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Nirmal Singh had given a written assurance that AIIMS would be announced before July 21. Warning the state government, he said: “History will not forgive them for playing treachery with the people of Jammu Pradesh and Kashmir Valley”.
