Ex-SEAL in fatal Tesla crash using autopilot was speeding
The US National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report Tuesday on the May 7 crash that the Tesla was traveling at 74 miles (119 kilometers) per hour in a zone where the limit was 65 miles per hour. The driver was using the car’s autopilot feature.

“If Musk can’t achieve the economies of scale and decrease production costs while increasing battery efficiencies, the future of Tesla would seem in question”. The Tesla’s top was sheered off in the crash when the trailer reportedly attempted to make a left turn in front of the vehicle.
It’s unclear which company ended the relationship, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed that Mobileye’s arrangements with other automakers prevented it from keeping pace with Tesla’s needs.
Tesla needs the factory to meet demand for its mass market Model 3. Elon Musk however, stated that the Israeli company’s partnership with other auto firms prevent it from keeping up with Tesla’s pace of development. That vehicle is due to launch later this year, almost a year ahead of Tesla’s similarly priced Model 3.
“The success of the Model 3 is really dependent on the success of the Gigafactory here”, said Tim Stevens of CNET.
Tesla is depending on economies of scale and the scale of this project in the desert is impressive. “We think that that’s not in the interest of Mobileye to continue with Tesla in that area”, said CTO Amnon Shashua, Bloomberg reports. When this is completed, it will cover an area equivalent to 107 NFL football fields.
The accident highlighted the friction between Mobileye and Tesla Motors, an issue that was brought further into light by George Hotz of comma.ai.
Last week Musk unveiled an ambitious plan to expand the company into electric trucks and buses, vehicle sharing and solar energy systems.
It is likely that Tesla Motors will begin to create the technology that it sourced from Mobileye in-house, especially with the hiring of former AMD chip engineer Jim Keller to be the vice president of Autopilot.
If the Model 3 is produced in volume with no major hitches, and sells as well as Tesla hopes, some of that pressure will ease.
“Nothing could possibly go wrong”, Musk said.

Musk said that once at full production, he expects the Model 3 to generate around $20 billion in revenue per year for Tesla with $5 billion in gross profit (or 25% gross margin).
