Ex-US President Ronald Reagan’s shooter released from hospital

John Hinckley Jr, best known as the Ronald Reagan shooter, is to be released from a mental institution after 35 years.

A federal judge in July ordered his release, claiming he was no longer a danger to others, according to the Washington Post.

Hinckley, today a 61-year-old man, will live full time at his mother’s home in Williamsburg and will have to work or do volunteering activities three days a week.

Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity, prompting outrage and leading to changes in the legal requirements for insanity defenses.

It became known that Hinckley’s motive for the alleged shooting stemmed from unhealthy obsession with Jodie Foster and Taxi Driver, the 1976 film she starred in where Robert De Niro’s character plots to assassinate a presidential candidate.

“It’s not a matter of forgiveness but a matter of security”, said Joe Mann, a vocal critic of the release who lives about a half-mile from Hinckley’s mother.

Mr Reagan and three others were injured in the shooting outside a hotel in Washington in March 1981.

When Brady died in 2014, a medical examiner attributed his death to the injuries received 33 years earlier, but no additional charges were filed against Hinckley.

He must meet with a doctor for psychiatric treatment at least twice per month, which can be reduce to once per month after 6 months.

The court will let Hinckley on the internet, but he can not research himself or his victims.
