Except George Lucas: Everyone liked the new ‘Star Wars’ movie
He said “The Force Awakens” is more of a retro movie and accused it of not having any new ideas, which isn’t entirely unfair. Lucas has released a statement to explain he didn’t mean it when he said the thing everybody quoted directly.

Lucas originally made the comment during an interview with US TV host Charlie Rose, after describing how Disney rejected his plans for future Star Wars movies.
Lucas appeared particularly unhappy with the direction the Star Wars franchise had taken since he sold the rights to it, along with Lucasfilm, his company, to Disney for $4 billion.
The petition posted on Change.org is aimed at Disney, the studio behind the blockbuster, calling on executives to organise a special screening for troops to make sure they don’t miss out on the movie event of 2015.
In a statement to Variety, Lucas said he’s “thrilled” to see Disney take Star Wars in “exciting directions” across categories. In an interview on “Charlie Rose” the “Star Wars” creator called the past films he directed his “kids” and likened the split from the franchise to that of a breakup with a romantic partner. This magazine is a ideal companion for the geeky Star Wars fan, or a good insider for those just getting to know about the saga as it keeps the reader up to speed on what has transpired in the galaxy in the past three decades since 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
“Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise”, Lucas said.
But on Rose’s show, Lucas criticised the producers and writers of the latest film for emphasising familiar elements of his previous work over innovation and storytelling of their own.
The Force Awakens premiered in the United States and Europe earlier this month, and is now the ninth highest-grossing film of all time, even before its nationwide release in China on 9 January.
Why did Lucas make the original comment then?
“I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize”, Lucas said.
With more than $600 million in ticket sales in two weeks, “The Force Awakens” is already the most successful movie in the “Star Wars” franchise.

Lucas also said in the interview that Disney was not “that keen” to have him involved on the “Force Awakens”.
