Exeter Labour MP Ben Bradshaw ups pressure on Corbyn: ‘Everything has changed’

Alan Johnson, the former home secretary, said that it often felt as if figures in the leader’s office were “working against the rest of the party and had conflicting objectives”.

The million dollar question is whether the members would elect someone else, if Mr Corbyn was in the race?

Shadow Housing Minister John Healey, shadow Energy Secretary Lisa Nandy and shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Owen Smith have all resigned – adding to the 12 shadow cabinet members Corbyn lost on Sunday.

“How can we seriously win a General Election, with a new leader of the Tory Party going to be selected, and confidently think Jeremy Corbyn is the person to do that?”

Mr Corbyn will today face a vote of no confidence among parliamentarians after a fractious meeting with Labour MPs and peers in Parliament last night.

Jeremy Corbyn is digging in for a bitter Westminster war of attrition with Labour MPs as he banks on grass roots supporters saving his leadership of the party.

“I have come to the view that under your leadership we will not be able to build bridges across the party, be the strong official opposition that the country needs or reach out to voters and build confidence in Labour”, she said in a letter to Corbyn, which she also published on Twitter.

“We admire the service that Jeremy Corbyn has offered to our Party as leader in the past year and his long service as an MP and within the Union movement”.

Redcar MP Anna Turley and Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins both resigned from their shadow ministerial roles.

The Labour leader is likely to face a challenge for his position after losing 20 members from his top team and a raft of junior frontbenchers over the last 24 hours as months of frustration exploded into a full-blown rebellion.

His attack in the House of Commons prompted cries of “resign!” from Labour backbenchers – laying bare the deep divide between Corbyn and his own party.

Mr Corbyn has resisted pressure to quit over what critics say was his lacklustre effort to keep Britain inside the European Union.

MPs will now vote on a motion of no confidence in Mr Corbyn today (TUES).

“On the doorstep I hear from resident after resident who tell us that they have no faith in our leader and that we need to change”.

Emily Thornberry replaced Hilary Benn, who began the coup at 1am on Sunday morning, as shadow foreign secretary, while she was replaced in the defence brief by former soldier Clive Lewis.
