Less than a week after being placed on the disabled list with a herniated disc, Fielder is expected to undergo neck surgery in the coming days that would end his season.
According to ESPN, Fielder went in to get a second opinion on his neck Monday, and the doctor he saw recommended the same as the previous one: surgery is likely needed.
The six-time All-Star has been mired in the worst season of his career. Fielder rebounded with a. 305 average, 23 homers and 98 RBIs in 158 games past year, but fell off a bit the second half of the season. That was the same as Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles said last week after an MRI showed a herniation between Fielder’s C4 and C5 disks. Those issues manifested at the plate for Fielder this season, as he was hitting only. Back surgery is a very real deal. Fielder, who is in his 12th major league season, is signed through 2020. After two years there, he was traded to the Rangers, where he has spent the past three seasons.
