The free travel, with a cap of ten journeys in a month, is the latest in the series of freebies implemented by the AIADMK regime such as cost-free milch cows, sheep, mixers, grinders and fans and laptop for students. Ms Jayalalithaa said application forms for the scheme could be obtained in bus depots and could be downloaded online.
“The scheme contemplates free go for senior citizens in Chennai Metropolitan Corporation buses will be actualized from February 24 after eliciting people’s reaction it will be stretched out to other places”, she said. The number of people using MTC buses has also increased, with the corporation plying more buses from the heart of city to Chengalpet or beyond. The commuter can give these tokens to the bus conductor and travel free. As part of fulfilling this promise, the Chief Minister today announced that in the first phase, the scheme would be launched in Chennai city wherein senior citizens would be allowed to travel in all MTC buses, barring the air-conditioned buses, free of cost.
She said 10 tokens would be given to each senior citizen every month and those willing could submit the application along with their photographs.

The Chief Minister announced the scheme on Thursday while addressing the Assembly.
