Experts baffled by northern Colorado West Nile cases

Deschutes County officials reported in late August that a Redmond horse had tested positive for West Nile, and vector control authorities in Central Oregon set traps for mosquitoes in the area. Health officials noted that people over 50 and those with compromised immune systems are more vulnerable to the virus.

None of the Zika cases in Louisiana were contracted from a local mosquito bite; all are travel-related, the health department said.

In total 108 human infections, including four deaths, have been documented in California this year.

OR had been one of only a handful of states in the USA not to record a human case of West Nile so far this year.

West Nile has moved into Galveston County. “But while most deaths and serious illness are among these older individuals, everyone’s at risk”, Gunzenhauser said.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports (http://tinyurl.com/hg7hygy ) studies show more mosquitoes become infected with West Nile during warmer periods, and Larimer County has had a hotter-than-usual summer.

No cases have been found in humans, horses or wild birds. Symptoms of WNV could appear within three to 12 days after infection.

Officials also are telling residents to eliminate the potential for standing water around homes and businesses.

OSDH recommends using mosquito repellants, particularly those containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535 during outside activities.

Ewing said residents should protect themselves from bites by shoring up window screens, using bug spray, covering exposed skin, and staying inside during peak mosquito hours between dusk and dawn.

You can take steps to protect yourself by using insect repellent with Deet, wearing long-sleeved shirts, trousers and socks, and avoiding outdoor time at dawn or dusk, when mosquitoes tend to be most active.

Another 10 cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Louisiana.
