Explosion at US base in Japan

The explosions occurred at the Sagamihara General depot in Sagamihara City, Japan, according to Shingetsu News Agency.

The report cited local authorities as saying the blasts occurred at the Sagami General Depot, a U.S. Army post which is used to store petroleum products and ammunition.

Video and photos began streaming in from social media shortly after noon (EST), showing a large explosion, several loud booms, sustained flames and billowing smoke rising from a structure.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or death.

Witnesses describe a what sounded like the roar of thunder, and a sequence of explosions for 10 or 15 minutes.

The site, surrounded by urban area, houses the 35th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, as well as logistical and medical departments for the U.S. military in the region.
