A law enforcement official says federal investigators have discounted a claim of responsibility for the New York City bombing on the social blogging service Tumblr.

At a press conference, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio summed up the current situation: “Here’s what we know: It was intentional”.

De Blasio said investigators believe there is no connection to an earlier incident in New Jersey, where an explosion went off in a garbage can on the route of a Marine Corps charity run Saturday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, touring the site of the blast in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, said there didn’t appear to be any link to worldwide terrorism.

A second, unexploded bomb was found several blocks to the north, on West 27th Street, during a subsequent sweep of the vicinity.

“A bomb exploding in NY is obviously an act of terrorism but it is not linked to worldwide terrorism”, he said.

“But we have a lot more work to do to be able to say what kind of a motivation was behind this”. Was it a personal motivation? “We know there was a bombing”.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation. The bomb in Manhattan appeared to have been placed near a large dumpster in front of a building undergoing construction, another law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation, told the AP.

Investigators found a “possible secondary device” a few blocks away at 27th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, the New York Police Department said on Twitter shortly after 11 p.m.

Homemade pressure cooker bombs were used in the Boston Marathon attacks in 2013 that killed three people and injured more than 260.

Officials solicited tips from the public, telling reporters at a news conference in the New York Police Department’s headquarters that they didn’t know who set off the bomb or why.

The Democratic governor also said that 1,000 additional law enforcement officers were being deployed as a precaution. Investigators looked into it and didn’t consider it relevant to the case, said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
