Explosion rocks Kabul city on first day of the new year
The attack occurred near the eastern entrance of the airport, said Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.

An explosion shook central Kabul Friday, part of a deadly attack on a restaurant popular with expats and wealthy Afghans, officials said.
Local media reported that one suspect – allegedly wearing a security forces uniform – has been arrested. It is unclear if there were other attackers who escaped or died in the blast.
Those security gates may have saved lives on Friday, when the auto exploded outside Le Jardin just as the restaurant began serving dinner.
The attack, for which the Taliban claimed responsibility, targeted Le Jardin, which is owned by the governor of Kabul, a former official in the administration of former President Hamid Karzai.
“The blast went off near French restaurant Le Jardin, frequented by foreigners in Qala-e-Fatullah Khan locality”.
Pakistan – the Taliban’s historic backers – hosted a milestone first round of talks in July but the negotiations stalled when the insurgents belatedly confirmed the death of longtime leader Mullah Omar.
The deployment, in addition to a recent arrival of USA special forces in the region, comes a year after North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces formally ended their combat operations in the country.

The Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Thursday informed Senate that the first round of quadrilateral talks of Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, and the USA on Afghan peace process will take place on January 16. He said that it has been agreed that Pakistan would not allow its soil to be used against Afghanistan, and we would press Afghanistan to do the same, as a large number of Taliban fugitives are taking refuge there.
