A shelter in place has been issued in east Conroe after an explosion caused a huge fire at a DrillChem plant.

On Facebook, the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office reported the explosions from what it characterized as a “multiple-alarm commercial fire”.

There are no reports of any injuries at this time.

Eye witnesses claim that the first explosion at DrillChem occurred around 4:40 p.m., and was followed by other explosions, although it’s not clear exactly how many followed.

Residents within a three kilometre radius of the plant have been advised to keep air conditioners turned off, close all vents, doors and windows and to stay indoors. Over 50 firefighters are on the scene in addition to a Hazmat crew from The Woodlands. “They don’t want to do anything to endanger firefighters”.

Police shut down nearby roads, but South Loop 336 has since been reopened as of 8:30 p.m. Friday evening.

Firefighting paperwork reviewed by KPRC 2 shows flammable chemicals at the company and cautions firefighters that some chemicals may froth if water or foam is sprayed on them.
