Ezekiel Elliott confident Dak Prescott ‘will be just fine’

That complicates the Cowboys’ current challenge – whether to place Romo on injured reserve with a designation to return.

Last week, Romo fractured his back in a preseason contest versus the Seattle Seahawks and he is expected to be out for weeks. While Dallas’ front office and coaching staff know his strong performances have come in preseason games, that doesn’t mean they don’t believe he can lead them to success in 2016.

The Cowboys have seen backup Kellen Moore go down for the season with an ankle injury, and are going to be without Tony Romo for about half the season give or take, which makes rookie Dak Prescott their starting quarterback, backed up by Jamiell Showers, an undrafted free agent from 2015. Smith badly injured his left knee in Notre Dame’s Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State on New Year’s Day.

The Cowboys have arguably the best offensive line in the National Football League, and a stable of talented running backs including first-round pick Ezekiel Elliott. He’ll be out the first six weeks at least.

Jones and his son, executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones, have said they are comfortable giving Prescott a shot as the starter.

Putting Romo on designated IR would mean he can’t return any sooner than November 6 against the Browns, the Cowboys eighth game of the season.

Prescott has drawn rave reviews for the way he studies the Cowboys offensive system and the calm demeanor with which he executes it. If Romo can’t play before the bye, how much sense does it make to carry him on the active roster for the first six weeks of the season?

“It’s not related to the other back issues that he’s had”, Garrett said. It’s a fracture. We’ve gotten a lot of different timetables for when he can return.

Last year, Davis played three games with Cleveland and passed for 547 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. “I always knew he would be successful, but it is impressive to see him play so well so early”. “I just want to be helpful to him”, said Frederick.

“I think we’re buying in a little more this season”, receiver Terrance Williams said, “and we’re trying to take advantage of some of things Dak can do to help the offense”. The Cowboys were 1-11 in games without Romo past year and 1-13 without him over the last three seasons.

Now he needs to get back on the field to prove it.

As it’s been speculated for some time, the quarterback-loaded Kansas City Chiefs are looking to trade Aaron Murray, their 2014 fifth-round draft pick out of the University of Georgia.
