Later in the race, he was told that Rosberg, who had regained second place, had a gearbox problem.
The day after former Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill warned the Australian his new teammate Max Verstappen is “going to be trouble”, Ricciardo had to watch on from a distance as he was again beaten in the Red Bull garage’s head-to-head battle.
Nico Rosberg said “it was important to let us have a look” at the track conditions behind the safety vehicle, while his in-race rival for second place Max Verstappen agreed but also wanted the restart sooner.
A powerhouse move around the outside of the German in the Becketts complex send the Silverstone crowd into raptures as Verstappen snatched second place, but a switch on to dry tyres seemed to favour the Mercedes auto, and Rosberg soon recaptured the place.
Verstappen pipped his team-mate to third on the grid and followed that up with a podium finish in Sunday’s 52-lap race. “Once I passed Nico I felt like I was closing on Lewis but then he pitted for slicks”. I thought the auto was pretty good in the high speed stuff, I was confident there.
“I was ready to race after maybe two laps”, said the Dutchman.
“The one run lap in Q3 was pretty good up until the last chicane; I lost quite a bit there”.
“The move on the outside at Becketts was fun, he was finding the inside so I thought let’s try the outside”.
“I am sure he will respond positively, but it is a positive thing in the team”.
“It was the right call initially to start it with the safety auto because there was quite a lot of standing water in the first half of the track”, he said.

“The fans here were great, I couldn’t believe how loud they were and they really supported me. You’ll definitely see a race tomorrow”.
