F1: Rosberg wins at Spa after chaotic start to Belgian Grand Prix
Sebastian Vettel managed the sixth spot despite the crash on the opening lap, while McLaren’s Fernando Alonso amazingly came seventh after starting from the last at the grid.

The race would then be suspended on lap eight after Renault driver Kevin Magnussen was fortunate to walk away from a high-speed crash, after losing control coming out of Eau Rouge.
World champion Hamilton benefited from a chaotic start and a safety auto period caused by a heavy crash by Renault’s Kevin Magnussen, who was taken to hospital with an ankle injury, to rescue an unlikely podium place.
Nico Rosberg was expected to win the Belgian Grand Prix for Mercedes after securing pole – which he did – and Lewis Hamilton was expected to fight is way through the field from the back after penalties, which he did.
Lewis Hamilton says the thought of fighting for victory crossed his mind during the Belgian Grand Prix, but ultimately the gap to Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo proved too big and he had to settle for third.
Hamilton still leads the driver’s championship on 232 points with Rosberg closely behind on 223 points.
Hurtling up through Eau Rouge, Magnussen appeared to take too much kerb on the exit, sending the Dane into a high-speed spin across the track before ramming into the wall, resulting in a safety auto period. As a result, Hamilton would be able to get away with just one large penalty at a track where it was easy to pass, rather than many small grid penalties at multiple races.
“I really can not believe that we came up so far”, said Hamilton, praising his team. It has been a remarkable day and a great race, ‘ he said.
“It has been a great weekend and I am very happy with that result of course”, said Rosberg who was subjected to a number of boos on the podium.
Behind them, Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen once again came together repeatedly on the track and continued in a war of words after the race.
A flurry of stops for fresh tyres followed over the first two laps under yellow, promoting Alonso and Hamilton up to fourth and fifth as they had no need to change rubber given they had started on the mediums at the back. “I’m going to have to battle my way through the traffic – but I’ll give it my best as always and see where I end up”.
Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo split the Mercedes drivers following another exemplary performance.
Raikkonen was.215 of a second quicker than Ricciardo and.323 faster than Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel, was frustrated in the roasting hot temperatures.
“I’d have had an even better summer if I went into it knowing I’d come out nine points ahead still after three engines”.
