He then casually wandered on the opposing side of the circuit unopposed for 53 seconds before finding a gap in the fence and leaving the track.

Twenty-seven-year-old Yogvitam Pravin Dokia jumped the barrier underneath the Esplanade Bridge and cross the track. He also told the judge he could not afford to post bail because he is unemployed and spent all his savings on tickets.

His actions caused the safety vehicle to be deployed and at least one driver, runner-up Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull, said the man’s intrusion affected the outcome of the race, according to the report. “I don’t really have that kind of money”, Channel News Asia quoted him as saying. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who was leading the race, shouted over team radio “there’s a fan on the track, fan on the track!”

A spokeswoman from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We can confirm the arrest of a British National in Singapore on 20th September and we stand ready to provide consular assistance”.

The Federation Internationale De L’Automobile (FIA) called it an “incident in which an unidentified man gained unauthorized entry to the circuit during the race” in a statement.
