England’s Football Association has made a social media faux pas in its tweeted recognition of the English women’s football team and its recent victory over Germany, a win that secured third place in this year’s World Cup.

With a thriving Women’s Super League in the country already being nurtured, the standard of the English players is expected to rise as the competition between the teams develops.
One of the questions facing the sport now is whether a generation of football fans, a lot of them men, can be persuaded to let women into their club – pardon the pun.
They were desperately unlucky in defeat against defending champions Japan in the semi-finals, where their gutsy display was overshadowed by Laura Bassett’s unfortunate last-gasp own goal.
There are also calls from a few to give England’s women fitting honours as they return home.
“This team has achieved something really special, we went into the tournament as rank outsiders; we’ve finished third and come very close to finishing in that final”.
The FA said the message had been “taken out of context”.
“It is fantastic”, Scott, of Manchester City, said of the turn-out at the airport to greet the England team’s flight arrival at 7.30am.
A spokesperson said: “The full story was a wider homecoming feature attempting to reflect the many personal stories within the playing squad as has been told throughout the course of the tournament”.
Meanwhile a Tweeter called Jess Lishak said: ‘Lovely bit of everyday sexism from the England twitter feed #putdownyourmedalandmakemeasandwich.’.

It paraphrased a similar line to the top paragraph of an article linked to in the post about the players flying home.
