Facebook app draining iPhone batteries

It works by reducing various background activities that drain your battery such as Mail push, automatic downloads, background app refresh and animated effects. The problem is that the iOS app is running in the background, and it is killing your battery while it does it.

Low Power Mode, a new feature in iOS 9, disables battery-hungry tasks such as Mail Fetch, Background App Refresh, motion effects, and animated wallpapers, resulting in as many as three hours of extra battery life, claims Apple. Known to consume as much as 15 per cent of battery life in iPhones in a week’s time, the app refuses to obey commands that ask it to shut down or stay dormant. We’ll definitely let you know when Facebook offers a fix – more than likely with an app update.

Matt Galligan, CEO & Co-founder of Circa, discussed the issue via a post on Medium.

You can check Facebook’s background usage settings by going to Settings Facebook Settings Background App Refresh.

The company itself hasn’t commented on the source of the bug, but at least those affected can look forward to a fix for it in the future.

Digital Spy reports that Facebook could be using up power while it’s running in the background and the social media giant released a statement, addressing the issue. “Facebook is actively creating channels to continue refreshing their app in the background when the user has explicitly stated that they do not want it to”, he says.

To check how long you’re using your apps on your iPhone, go to Settings, scroll down and tap Battery. Another theory suggests that the Facebook app is “hijacking audio sessions on iOS” and the software keeps on playing audio in the background, but of course, in silent mode.
