On September the 8 1966 the first episode of the TV series was aired and so began a fictional look into the future of space travel. Amusing enough, it was actually the sixth episode filmed, but the network and Desilu Productions believed the horror-elements, having an alien creature that feeds on the salt in a human body and can take on any form, made it more appealing to a wider audience. The tweets show just how much “Star Trek”, spawned by original executive producer Gene Roddenberry’s idea that humankind could overcome its differences and spread throughout the galaxy, has resonated in so many corners. Hopefully you’ve liked the requisite number of Star Trek things to satisfy Facebook’s algorithms, at whose mercy we forever are. A number of those are collated in this celebratory video, 90 seconds of memorable movie moments released to commemorate Star Trek’s 50th birthday this week.

The show’s lore states the Federation was founded by four planets: Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, and Tellar.

In the episode “Amok Time”, audiences got their first glimpse at Spock’s people. During its initial run, the show had moderately successful ratings. Dr. McCoy, suffering from an overdose, uses an ancient device and travels to the 1930s NY. And here’s to the next 50 years. Kirk, Scotty, Dr. McCoy and Uhura are transported to the Terran Empire’s ISS Enterprise after a transporter mix-up, and must work to make their way home while dodging assassination attempts.

The first pilot was actually “The Cage”, filmed in 1965 with a largely different cast.

The movie house at 1449 Potomac St. continues its “Star Trek” weekend with the documentary “For the Love of Spock” at 10 p.m. Friday, 9:15 p.m. Saturday and 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday. Perhaps like me you have a shelf of old Star Trek novels and a model of the USS Defiant on your window sill.
