Facebook remains the dominant social network for US internet users, while Twitter has apparently failed to keep apace with rivals like Instagram and Pinterest.

About 72 percent of online adults surveyed this year by the organization said they use Facebook, a percentage that hasn’t changed much since 2012.

And Facebook, like Twitter, Pinterest and other social networks, is currently trialling new “buy now” buttons to let people purchase items directly from within the social network instead of needing to follow an external web link. Overall, 36 percent of online adults say they use some type of messaging app. Unsurprisingly, the proportions are higher among younger U.S. adults, with 49% of smartphone owners ages 18-29 using messaging apps, and 41% using apps that automatically delete messages.

Compared to elderly users, the younger generation inclines more toward Twitter.

Since its inception, Facebook has outperformed other rival social networks platforms by a considerable lead.

These are just a few of the more popular social networking sites, but more crop up all the time.

Compared with the elderly, young people are more likely to use Twitter, said the report. Pinterest saw an 87 percent swell in adult users during the two-year time frame, LinkedIn 40 percent and Twitter 44 percent. “I have six kids under 23 and none of them use Facebook regularly”.

Pinterest more than doubled its user base in the past three years.

The Pew report is based on telephone interviews conducted from March 17 to April 12 among a national sample of 1,907 adults, including 1,612 Internet users, with a margin of error between 2.6 and 4.6 percentage points, depending on the subgroup.

In addition to the growing use of messaging apps (e.g., Snapchat, WhatsApp, iMessage), the report examines usage patterns and demographics associated with the major social networking sites.

Despite all the news about sites such as Reddit, Digg and Slashdot of late, they’re not all that popular. The startup has 240 million registered users; the majority are in the U.S. and between the ages of 13 and 24.
