Facebook paying celebrities, media companies to use Facebook Live

Facebook has reportedly already made investments of $50 million in the creation of live video from prominent individuals and content producers.

GeekWire reports Wilson’s contract for Facebook Live is $200,000.

The success of the service to date puts it as a key player among other video platforms, and it is expected to grow considerably over the coming months.

Celebrities like Deepak Chopra, actor-comedian Kevin Hart and top chef Gordon Ramsay are also in it to earn big. Since Facebook plans to sell ads against its video streams, the current deals with celebs and publishers are used to jumpstart the overall engagement with the service. The document obtained by the paper shows that Facebook’s deal with online publisher BuzzFeed has the highest value at USD 3.05 million, the Journal said, followed by the New York Times at USD 3.03 million and CNN at USD 2.5 million.

For example, the most valuable deal is with BuzzFeed, which gets $3.05 million. They will also likely attract a lot of viewership on Facebook’s platform.

The social network has put in place deals with a variety of top-tier news outlets and celebrities in an effort to get them use Live, Facebook’s answer to the Periscope live streaming service launched by Twitter past year.

“The social network’s partners vary widely”, MarketWatch notes. Media companies, by comparison, drove just 14.5 percent of Live traffic. So it will be interesting to see if Facebook’s partnership with celebrities could indeed encourage more home creators to upload original content.

According to Mashable, Facebook opened up the Live platform to all its users earlier this year.
