On Thursday, June 2, Facebook thanked the users of the app and alerted them that it was ending support for Notify.

When the Notify first launched in November, about 70 companies partnered with the social media firm on the app. BuzzFeed, Vogue, CBS Sports, The New York Times, The Weather Channel, The Washington Post, Groupon and more are included in Notify.

Facebook is shutting down Notify, the 7-month-old app that let you subscribe to push notifications from your favorite publishers.

“We will begin integrating Notify functionality into other Facebook products, like Messenger, and will be removing Notify from the App Store”, technology blog Engadget reported quoting Facebook on Friday.

An official Facebook spokesperson revealed that the product team has learned a lot as to the steps required to make relevant and accurate notifications. And with more than 900 million users in Messenger every month, this will be definitely a great opportunity for the publishers to reach to a huge customer base in no time. Today, the company announced it would be shutting the app down. And with its new focus on chatbots, it seems Facebook is hoping its multi-functional Messenger app will become people’s go-to location for breaking news items.

As per an estimate, Notify had just 63,000 downloads till date after launching which is not really impressive. With the rise of the chat-bots, it is now being anticipated that the company might be working on ways of delivering news content via the Facebook Messenger for those who install these news-specific chat bots in the future.
