Facebook rolls out new ‘Message Requests’ feature for Messenger

Facebook states that it yearns to make its very own Messenger to be a haven for users who would like to get in touch with someone they need to contact just by discerning their name. Messages from everyone else would go right to your Other folder, making it easier to filter and sort through.

Users will see the public info of a sender’s profile such as their name, photo, city and job.

In its place will be Message Requests, which is a catch-all for “messages from out-of-network users”, according to Forbes.

“What’s the “other” inbox?”, you’re not alone.

Whether you hated the “Other” messages inbox on Facebook or didn’t even know it existed, the underused feature is being replaced with something that’s potentially much more useful: Message Requests for Messenger.

“Some people keep doing the same things over and over again that we’ve asked them not to because the messages we send go into their “others” inbox that they don’t check”.

But there are a few critical remarks on this move by Facebook as well.

As of late, the messaging system of Facebook is not seamless: when somebody who is not yet your friend send message to you, there is a big possibility that it would be tucked into the “Other Messages” folder.

Message Requests for Messenger will replace Facebook’s “Other” folder, which appeared only on the Web-based version and tended to be a mostly ignored, catch-all space for spam messages from strangers rather than for greetings from long-lost friends. Messages will arrive automatically, even if the sender doesn’t have a Facebook account, but will be stored as a contact as long as users have the app/program synced up.

Highlighting the fact that the new “Message Requests” feature allows individuals to attach with anybody by way of chat, Tony Leach – Messenger’s Product Manager on Message Requests – told TechCrunch: “We’ve heard so many stories like estranged parents trying to get back in touch, or you lost your wallet and someone trying to get in touch with you”.
