Facebook has 1.5 billion users, according to the company, meaning an increase to 5 billion users would more than double its size, adding 3.5 billion.

Typical Facebook users are now 3.57 degrees apart, said the company, as opposed to 3.74 degrees of separation in 2011.

That means everyone “is connected to every other person by an average of three and a half other people”, Facebook’s blog post says.

“Friendship isn’t a distraction from the meaningful things in life”. Because Feb. 4 has dawned in part of the world, some users are already seeing the videos the social network put together about them and their friends. “And when we fight for what we believe and change the world, we do that with friends too”.

Facebook’s released new “friendship” stickers for Friends Day.

On Thursday, Facebook celebrated its 12 birthday as “Friends Day” by releasing several new feautures, including a new video product for its users. The videos will be rolling out throughout the day at the top of News Feed or can be accessed by clicking the “Watch Yours” link below someone else’s video.

Facebook uploaded personalized videos of its users featuring their pictures and images of past moments. You can edit the video and quickly share it on the site, or just ignore it and move on with your life.

A limited edition “Best Friends” sticker pack has also been unveiled on Facebeook Messenger to celebrate the occasion. A feature called “On This Day” surfaces posts users made on the same date in years past, while “Year in Review” highlights posts from the past 12 months.

Commentators also point out some people also have “friends” on Facebook who they have not met in real life.
