Greg Burke, Vatican spokesman, said the pope and Zuckerberg spoke about “how communications technology can be used to alleviate poverty, encourage a culture of encounter and help deliver a message of hope, especially to the most disadvantaged people”. Pope Francis just got a model of it.
“We’re a technology innovation firm and he met with us to discuss how to support those building technology locally and software developers and also listen to their challenges”, Mr. Tijani said.
Zuckerberg presented Pope Francis an Aquila-Facebook solar-powered drone created to help the Internet expand to and improve in developing countries.
Aquila is created to beam internet signal to people within a 60-mile communications diameter for up to 90 days at a time.
The initiative behind Aquila is called Internet.org, and its goal is to help people to communicate with others all over the world to make a positive cultural impact.
Writing about the experience in a Facebook post, Zuckerberg made parallels between the Pope’s mission of “communicating” with people around the world and his company’s goal of providing internet access to underserved regions. Aquila has been created to give access to internet connectivity in places in the world that don’t now have it.
The Facebook CEO further said that he and wife Priscilla talked with the Pope about Internet connectivity and its requirement in various parts of the world. “You can feel his warmth and kindness, and how deeply he cares about helping people”, Zuckerberg wrote.
Social media-savvy Pope Francis is a regular tweeter, with almost 10 million followers, and also signed up to Instagram earlier this year. The Pope’s Instagram account was launched the following month and racked up more than a million followers within 12 hours.
Zuckerberg, who is renowned for his uniform grey t-shirts, even dressed for the occasion, donning a dark suit and tie, while Chan looked demure in a black, knee-length dress.
Zuckerberg kicked off his visit by attending the wedding of Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, who he described as a “good friend”, at Lake Como in northern Italy.
