Facebook’s new feature allows users to view a stream of live events

With the ability to see content just from friends, it allows for a very personalized experience which is quite different from the curated offerings from the likes of Twitter and Snapchat.

Facebook is testing a new feature that lets users check in on live events from their couches at home. The difference between Facebook and others is in terms of curating content. While Snapchat and Twitter collects live content from all of its subscribers, Facebook’e live streams are only part of people in the friends’ list. For the first time with Lollapalooza, Facebook is making that information available remotely.

This Place Tips Lollapalooza experience is just one of the many ways Facebook is trying to help people get the feel of an event when they’re not there. During Facebook’s recent earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg called Instagram one of the “best places to get a real-time snapshot of the world”, and the app’s recent redesign puts a much greater emphasis on tapping into live events.

Of course this is a lot like the Our Story feature that Snapchat has, where you can tap into live events and distant locations to see what’s happening. “During Lollapalooza, fans around the U.S. will be able to browse Lollapalooza Place Tips to see posts and photos from their friends who are there and live, trending content from the festival”.

Back in June, Twitter announced plans to launch “Project Lightning,” which will curate events-centric photos, videos, and tweets. Facebook says Lollapalooza is a test, and it will continue to explore applications for the feature in the future.
