Fairbury Flag Lady Promotes Flag Day, Patriotism

A few years later, in 1885, Wisconsin school teacher Bernard John Cigrand placed a flag in an inkwell and had his students write about the meaning of the flag, according to the National Flag Day Foundation. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

Washington City Mayor Ken Neilson also addressed the crowd in attendance.

Then, the flags were unfolded and dropped into the flames.

State Rep. Jim Boyd of Bradenton was among those attending the flag retirement ceremony Wednesday, and expressed his sadness and shock over the shooting to Gary Tibbetts, special assistant to Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota.

“The importance of coming here is because of the veterans who are residing in this nursing home”, said Parker County veteran service officer and American Legion member John Hale.

Bruce Steffen, a Vietnam veteran and honor guard member, said Flag Day honors “the symbol of our country. The country is strong”, she said.

To some people, June 14 is just another day on the calendar, but to people like the Daughters of the American Revolution, it signifies a day of preservation, education and patriotism that is Flag Day. They may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated.

Crampton detailed the flag’s history to those in attendance.

June 14 is National Flag Day honoring the proudly displayed colors of our nation
