51-year-old Dawn Diana Raines-Hewes made her first appearance in Solano County Superior Court Thursday afternoon.
A 51-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of intentionally drowning her 4-year-old grandson, according to police in Fairfield, California.
The deceased 4-year-old was not the only grandchild at Raines-Hewes’ home at the time of the drowning, Mayoral says, as Raines-Hewes’ 1-year-old and 6-year-old granddaughters were also in her care when officers arrived.
The case remains under investigation and information about any possible motive is not now being released.
Officers found the boy, who has been identified as Richard Kite, unconscious and not breathing, police said in the statement. Attempts to resuscitate the boy were unsuccessful and he died at the hospital.
ABC10 found no criminal history for Raines-Hewes, and the police spokesperson said they are not aware of any criminal background either.
Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to play a role in the incident, he said. She was arrested and booked into jail without bail.
She called the drowning of the boy “very hard to believe” and said she doesn’t know how to take it.
But her friend and former sister-in-law, Lori Hewes, 43, said in an interview Wednesday that she was shocked to learn of the accusations and arrest.
“In the course of her taking care of these kids, she took the 4-year-old boy and drowned him in the bathtub intentionally”, Mayoral told KGO-TV.

“They were a quiet family”, he said. She went on to say that Hewes seemed to be stressed, but she or her other neighbors had no idea she had just drowned her grandson in the bathtub.
