Having patented his signature spin move in the process, Freeney has terrorized quarterbacks to the tune of 119.5 career sacks, which is 19th on the NFL’s all-time career sacks list. It appears Freeney will move back to defensive end, per the Falcons’ official release.
General manager Thomas Dimitroff recently said the seven-time Pro Bowler remained on the radar, although Freeney visited the Falcons June 1 and didn’t initially sign.
“He has the right attitude, a stand-up guy”, Freeney said. He’s a standup guy.
“I’m here to help turn that corner”.
Freeney will likely be the face of a group of DE’s headlined by the likes of Derrick Shelby, Adrian Clayborn, Brooks Reed, Courtney Upshaw, and Vic Beasley. “He has a lot of potential and a lot of talent”.
“I’m excited to go against him”. “I’m excited to pick his brain and learn from him”. “It will probably motivate me, too”.
The 15 -year vet is coming off a season with the Cardinals where he recorded eight sacks in 11 games as a sub-package pass rusher.
The injury happened during one of the last plays of 11-on-11 work in the second full-pad practice of camp. “I wasn’t back covering (Rob) Gronkowski 30 yards down the field”. After two seasons in San Diego he then found himself signing with the Arizona Cardinals midseason a year ago, where he played really well. “I love to play. It’s done, ‘” Freeney said.
“It’s up to them”, he said. We found out about it (Wednesday) night. It helped that Quinn used to be a defensive line coach and spoke the same language.
If this was all about stature, as even owner Arthur Blank said, “We can just put a statue out here”.
Left tackle Jake Matthews called Freeney a “legendary” pass-rusher and said Falcons offensive linemen will learn from working against him in practice. And it’s going to be a good thing because we need it, obviously.
Dominique Price, Green’s agent, didn’t want to comment on the situation when reached by phone.
NOTES: RB Tevin Coleman was held out after rolling his foot on Tuesday. Shanahan intercepted a Ryan pass when Hooper ran his route at the wrong depth.
