Falcons take down undefeated Panthers 20-13
There was nothing fluky about it.

“There are no magic words that need to be said”, said Panthers quarterback Cam Newtown, a self-proclaimed Superman who operated more like Clark Kent throughout this afternoon.
Yes, the Panthers did.
The Falcons’ 20-13 win over the Panthers ended Carolina’s bid for an undefeated season.
In two games since Benwikere’s injury, the Panthers’ secondary has allowed five touchdown tosses while picking off just one pass. That came when Eli Manning’s arm was hit as he was trying to throw the ball out of bounds. Carolina had to escape twice in the previous three weeks with narrow road wins.
“That was probably the biggest disappointment”, coach Ron Rivera said. To be 14-1 at this point in the season is tremendous, so let’s not lose sight of that. It’s not the end of the world, obviously….
Resting players isn’t even an option. Every hand is needed on deck.
-QB Matt Ryan, who was inconsistent during the Falcons’ six-game losing streak, bounced back with arguably his best game of the season against the Panthers.
There are no guarantees in the NFL. Anybody can truly beat anybody when the wind blows the right way.
We are at the beginning of a truly fun and exciting receiver versus corner battle that all fans will get to enjoy for years to come.
In the penultimate week of the regular season the Panthers were aiming to move to 15-0, but the Falcons, fighting for their playoff lives, had other ideas.
“People say Josh Norman is tough, don’t get me wrong he’s a good player, but they play Cover 2”, Jones said after the team’s 23-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. There were some plays that we left out there.
With Peterson relaxing on the sideline, Jerick McKinnon rushed for two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 68-yard romp through a disinterested defense with the temperature down to 11 degrees. Instead of a chance to lead at the half, it was a tie game.
The victory against previously ideal Carolina is one of the biggest highlights of the season for the Falcons (8-7), who had a major slump following a 5-0 start.
The defense laid the groundwork for a nasty day on its first series.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City won its ninth consecutive game, beating Cleveland to reach the playoffs. Mason had three carries for 3 yards and caught a 3-yard pass. Fairley made two tackles for the Rams before leaving the game with a concussion. I saw a Panthers team that at times looked half asleep.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Running backs Mike Gillislee and Karlos Williams combined for 169 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns while leading Buffalo over Dallas.
But that was it for Carolina TDs.
Eric Decker’s 6-yard touchdown catch on the first drive of overtime – after New England chose to kick off – lifted the Jets to a 26-20 victory that put NY in position to make the playoffs. Against Carolina, Atlanta threw the football 30 times and also ran it 30 times.
Newton, the Panthers’ MVP candidate with the Superman celebration pose, was just OK. Olsen led the Panthers with four catches for 40 yards.
Jones got the best of his matchup with Carolina cornerback Josh Norman.
But Coleman fell down.

Jones timed his jump perfectly, snatching the ball from behind Kuechly at the 17 and running untouched to the end zone. The Falcons were one-touchdown underdogs even in their notoriously friendly home confines. Schofield said the Panthers weren’t very sportsmanlike after the game. “We’ll have to talk to the league officials about what transpired and we’ll go from there, but there’s nothing we can do about it. We didn’t get off the field”. “We’re professional athletes. You guys are good at what you do as far as the media is concerned”.
