Free-to-play social games, mobile games, and MMO games still accounted for the largest part of the equation, with almost $660 million in revenues which amounted to an increase of 13.5 percent.
This is telling of the free-to-play model, but it also shows a lot about the popularity of mobile gaming too, with the ability to not only target the gamers looking forward to Fallout 4, but also tap into the powerful casual gamer market the money is there if the game is designed right. For a little while, the world of mobile gaming wasn’t dominated by Clash of Clans, Candy Crush or mad Birds.
Constructing new rooms, building relationships and protecting vault dwellers safe are some of the key features the game has to offer players. As the game is totally free to download and play, all the revenue comes from in-app purchases.
However, real money can speed up that process.
Bethesda updated Fallout Shelter for the first time earlier this week, introducing a photo mode to capture and share photos of your vault. And that is precisely the reason of its unexpected success.

Naturally, Fallout Shelter’s recent financial feat has put the game alongside other lucrative mobile triple-A spinoffs, such as Call of Duty: Heroes, Halo: Spartan Assault, and Heroes of Dragon Age on iOS and Android. “Originally developed as a marketing tool for the release of its upcoming Fallout 4, the mobile game is a hit in its own right… on the iOS top-grossing charts”. Not to mention, Fallout Shelter’s bottom line should undoubtedly continue to grow after its release for Android in August.
