The Australian government confirmed in a statement Sunday it was dealing with a missing persons case in Mexico but declined further comment due to privacy reasons.

Before they mysteriously disappeared, Mr Lucas and Mr Coleman were on a road trip to Guadalajara to see Mr Coleman’s girlfriend Andrea Gomez.

Mr Coleman and Mr Lucas’ families released a statement yesterday afternoon, confirming the pair’s van had been found by authorities.

The bodies could not be identified by the police on their initial investigation and have now been taken to Mexico’s Forensic Medical Services for identification.

The families hold deep fears for the safety of their sons but stress that they are still waiting for details to be confirmed“.

“Members of Dean and Adam’s families will be traveling to Mexico in the coming days and working with Australian consular officials and Mexican authorities”.

Mr Lucas’s partner Josie Cox, who he had planned to propose to, said the men were a couple of “very keen and confident surfers” and “may have gone in search of waves in remote villages close by”.

On Sunday evening, Adam’s mother shared a link to an online fundraising page set up to fly the Lucas and Coleman families to Mexico.

About 7pm on Saturday evening, a woman understood to be the partner of one of the men posted an update on Facebook saying there had been “distressing developments”.

A blue and white van identical to the one the men were driving, though, was discovered burned out some 200kms from Los Mochis.

She said that Ms Cox was bringing Mr Lucas’s dental records for matching and she had “pieces of dreadlocks” that Mr Coleman had given her.

“I have included as many photos as possible of them and their van”.
