Families of Alton Sterling and slain officer Montrell Jackson come together
Tensions rose sharply after the death of Alton Sterling, a black man killed by white Baton Rouge officers after a scuffle at a convenience store.

Tullier, 41, was shot in the head and stomach while sitting in his patrol vehicle, running the shooter’s license plate information, State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson said during a news conference Monday afternoon. He nonetheless expressed that “there’s no doubt whatsoever that these officers were intentionally targeted and assassinated”. Another officer was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, hospital officials said. Long was armed with a IWI Tavor SAR 5.56-millimeter rifle, a Springfield XD 9-millimeter pistol, and a Stag Arms M4 variant 5.56-millimeter, Edmonson said. Just imagine our communities – white, black or brown – without police protection. The gunman was identified as Gavin Long of Kansas City, Missouri, who was black.
Garafola, taking cover behind a dumpster at the store with his gun drawn, tried to rescue his wounded fellow officer – only to run face-to-face into Long. Two others remained hospitalized, one in critical condition. Three other officers were wounded. One is fighting for his life, “said Edmonson as he reviewed the fruits of their investigation”. But each of us can begin to nurse our nation’s bleeding wounds by dismissing those who seek to aggravate us by race or politics, whether they’re political candidates or Black Lives Matter activists.
“I just want us to have peace and drive down the road and not feel like we have to duck our heads and look around and see if someone’s going to be on top of a roof”, said Pam Collins, a resident of a Baton Rouge suburb who brought three shiny balloons to honor the officers.
The 29-year-old black man was shot dead by police after the attack.
In the manifesto, Long said he expected people who knew him wouldn’t believe he would commit “such horrendous acts of violence”.
Obama concluded his letter to police by stating “we have your backs”, though this alone will probably not be enough to convince conservatives that he is genuinely interested in keeping law enforcement officers safe. Several law enforcement officers also have been killed in the past 15 years, Potok said.
Authorities say without that shot, they believe Long would have continued the killing spree, possibly driving a short distance down the highway to the Baton Rouge police headquarters.
After 9/11 law enforcement, government agencies, and the media focused too much on Islamist terrorism and ignored the sovereign citizen movement, according to MacNab.
“We are trained to take care of our own”.
“He was first a Marine”, Couvillion said.
Gerald had only recently joined the BRPD and was a father of two who served in the Marines and the Army.
“I swear to God I love this city but I wonder if this city loves me”, the 32-year-old policeman, who leaves his wife Trenisha and four-month-old son Mason, wrote.
In the message, Jackson said he was physically and emotionally exhausted and complained that while in uniform, he gets nasty looks.
Dabadie’s grief was shared by Gov. John Bel Edwards, who called the shooting “pure, unadulterated evil”.
“It’s been touch and go for the family”.
McPhail explained that every call requires a different number of officers to respond. She woke up her husband, a former city police officer.
But an imprint from the gunman left behind on social media included videos in which he decried mistreatment of African-Americans by law enforcement and praised the attack on Dallas police, perpetrated by another black USA military veteran.

Law enforcement officials ask the entire community to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement, either with your local police department or by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI. These are trying times. “Please don’t let hate infect your heart. This city must and will get better”.
