In May, a forensic report submitted in court said that the meat found in a waste bin outside Akhlaq’s home was that of “a cow or its progeny”.

A court has ordered the police to register a case against the family of a man who was killed past year over allegations that they had been storing and consuming beef at home.

A total of 19 persons are accused of lynching Akhlaq. The detailed court order is awaited.

The petitioner had alleged that Akhlaq and his family members had slaughtered a calf. “We will challenge the order in higher court”, Yusuf Saifi, lawyer of Akhlaq family, told PTI.

Akhlaq was lynched by his neighbours in Dadri last September over rumours that he and his family had eaten beef. The killing had triggered a nationwide outrage.

The police action came after Judicial Magistrate Vijay Kumar yesterday ordered to investigate and lodge an FIR for cow slaughter against Akhlaq’s family. The meat in our fridge was mutton and this is the truth. However, the laboratory had also asked the administration to get the samples tested at the forensic lab in Mathura for a “final diagnosis”. In September past year, a mob, allegedly led by local BJP leader’s son and nephew barged into Akhlaq’s house beat him to death. He along with his mother, sister and grandmother are the only independent eye-witnesses to the murder of Akhlaq and now all of them stand accused of cow slaughter.

The magistrate hearing the matter observed that the prima facie evidence placed before the judiciary by the residents of Bisada village demand a cognizable charge against the family members of Akhlaq.

Questioning the authenticity of claims about beef being found in Akhlaq’s house, his brother Jaan Mohammad said, “No kind of meat was recovered from inside the house, police themselves have said so”.
