Family of UC Berkeley student killed in Nice attack in shock

University officials confirmed Sunday that Nicolas Leslie, 20, was among the 84 people killed in a truck attack in the French Riviera city of Nice.

Leslie’s Facebook page said he was from Milan, Italy, and grew up in Del Mar, where he attended Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, before heading to Berkeley. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents called UC officials on Sunday to confirm that Leslie was among the dead.

Since the attack took place on Thursday, Leslie’s family and friends have been searching for the student by posting pictures of him in the area.

“This is tragic, devastating news”, UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks told NBCNews.com. ‘All of us in the UC Berkeley family – both here on campus, and around the world – are heartbroken to learn that another promising young student has been lost to senseless violence.

He was with three UC Berkely students Vladyslav Kostiuk, 23, and Diana Huang, 20, and Daryus Medora, 21, who were also wounded in the attack.

The University of California, Berkeley, has confirmed the death of the 20-year-old after a truck driver deliberately ploughed through a crowd, killing at least 84 people.

His parents flew from California to find him, “thinking he was alive”, his uncle said – only to discover that he would not be coming home.

Members of Leslie’s family could not be reached. He had planned to study at the university’s business school at the fall and was a member of a student-run consulting group that provides marketing, research and social responsibility advice.

Jain, an Indian national, was working on e-commerce growth at Eastern Bank Limited in Dhaka through an internship with UC Berkeley’s Subir and Malini Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies, the university said. “And send positive energy and light to them because they are in darkness right now”. On Facebook, he had posts about a student consulting group with which he was involved, and photos from attractive places, kite-surfing and hiking.
