Fans chant “Zika” at Hope Solo

And because of the weird format, nobody would blame you if you were unaware that the US women’s soccer team played their first contest on Wednesday, in which they beat New Zealand 2-0.

Solo, the women’s national team goalkeeper, is a polarizing and often controversial figure, and became the subject of local ire in the team’s opening game victory against New Zealand after posting a social media photograph of her extensive measures to guard against mosquito bites.

Ms Solo’s Zika-defence gear may have been excessive but she is not the only Olympic athlete to express concerns over the threat of the virus.

She was willing to share some of her other arsenal items against Zika. Solo has been such a mainstay on the US women’s national team that she’s poised to reach a mark that has never been set by a goalkeeper of either sex. And I’m very focused in doing that. Stop booing her and boo the U.S. Soccer League instead.

For one thing, while Solo’s posts were very tongue-in-cheek in nature, there’s nothing wrong with preparing yourself for a disease that can not be prevented via vaccines or medications.

New Zealand tried gamely to resist but was broken down again just a minute into the second half.

Hope Solo during the Olympic opener for the USWNT on August 3. In fact, I’m cheering for Team USA, but besides Team USA, I’m going to be cheering for the host country.

Solo’s best course of action here is to take it all in stride, and that’s what she seems to be doing. Pellegrino attributed Solo’s decision to speak out to sour grapes regarding the allocation of the 2016 Games – Rio beat out Chicago in the voting. She also received boos aplenty. “And I as I closed her – some people think she went through my legs on objective because it was the only part that was open because I had her closed down – I don’t really think so, I think she just tried to crack a shot”, Solo said. “And if they had fun at my expense, more power to them”. Those chants came in response to a photo she posted on Instagram of herself wearing a mosquito net.

“I found a lot of success in the inches of the game”.

Apparently whoever writes the scripts for soccer figured we haven’t had a Hope Solo controversy in a while.
